How to get that next promotion or raise

If you are aiming to get a promotion or rise then take charge… this is your life and you can’t sit by and hope that someone will notice you and your great work ethic and give you the raise or the promotion. Cause you are a go-getter this is what you are going to do:

Ask what are the requirements
Sit down with your boss and ask what you have to show and prove in order for you to get that promotion. Do this well in advance so you have a realistic time frame to accomplish what is asked of you. If possible ask for specific figures for example number of new clients, idea customer satisfaction rating, the percentage of cost reduction etc.

Besides the objective and measurable also cover other factors such as teamwork, taking charge etc. In addition, find out if you lack qualifications required for the upgrade and work on getting those.

Provide receipts

After having accomplished what you had discussed or when it is time for the next performance review, bring all your receipts (proof). Show the record of the customer satisfaction, cost savings etc Also show your performance compared to the department, are you deserving more than the others?

Get rid of fear and the imposter syndrome 

Then ask for the raise or promotion, sometimes fear holds us back or we are too afraid to ruffle feathers.

Get rid of the imposter syndrome or the unbelief that you are not good enough for the role or the raise. Imposter syndrome is a concept describing individuals who are marked by an inability to internalize their accomplishments and a persistent fear of being exposed as a “fraud”.

You can do the following to overcome this:

  • Embrace the fact that you are not perfect and that no one on this earth. The less you fight this the better, you can then face your perceived weaknesses head-on without the guilt.
  • Remind yourself of your accomplishments. Write them down on your phone and everytime that importer syndrome tries to sneak up on you… shut it down with the facts. Write down the good comments and feedback you get, and refer to it often. Sometimes people see the value in our work that we might be missing or minimising.
  • Lastly, reward yourself for every success, this creates a reinforcing behaviour, which becomes your habit then brand.
