In this week’s podcast, I talk about how we interpret information which in turns forms our reality and how that can affect your lives and our beliefs.

“Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become a character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny” – Frank Outlaw
Our reality is our perception of our world and depends on what we pay attention to.
How we interpret what we pay attention to depends on our beliefs, prejudices, cultural conditioning – our lived in experience (our past), our mental models and our worldview
For example, how we view the police, for some they are protectors, and defenders justice for others they are corruption agents. None of the perspectives are classified as false without looking about the personal beliefs, prejudices and life experiences If in their life, the police once assisted them after a robbery then they were defenders of justice. However, if that person was once robbed and the police did not do an adequate job in their view, then they are not.
Another example is love if your heart has been broken a couple of time then you become skeptical of the notion of love. Whereas if you met, dated and married your high school sweetheart, you may be a firm believer in love. Ultimately is not about proving who is wrong or right but acknowledging that all the views are correct for that said individual.
What we pay attention to determines what we see in life and hence determines our reality. If you are a negative person, the then chances are that you will pick up on negative aspects of any day over the good. You will focus on the car that cut into the front of you over the one that gives you the way. You will look for signs that everyone is working against you if you believe your co-workers hate you as opposed to trying to understand their actions, it may not even be about you. Maybe they are dealing with some stress. I worked with one guy who thought that the boss hated him, every day he found something to point out where that is the way the manager was, the treated everyone that way but because of his past experiences and perception on life that is what he zoned one and took it to heart.
Awareness of what we are paying attention to moment by moment is called PRESENT MOMENT AWARENESS or just, PRESENCE. Rewind them our head; we replay life senses in our mind.Mostly these can be negative; we can replay mistakes or bad events that took part. Every time we replay these, it reaffirms our perception. Which is why thinking about what you are thinking about is good. Try and be in the present, not the past.
Meditation, yoga, as simple as focusing on breathing, on a sound, on your body movement will help you be in the present.
